Here is a magazine cover designed by Dave Eggers that uses typography to stimulate visual interest as if it were an engaging picture. Garamond is used exclusively, but variation is achieved by changing the font size. All of the type is contained in boxes that are both rigid and malleable. There is great consistency in the type contained in the rigid boxes, but vast fluctuations in the type that rustles about in the hand-drawn boxes. Whether or not the type has the energy to break out of the boundaries, it all seems at home within the containment. The variation between Garamond's thick spines and thin finials and serifs makes it fit into the trembling composition of the cover. This effect actively moves the eye around the page, as we led along by the contrasts between order and orderly disorder.
